Sample of the Week - Summertime

The Sample for the week of 3.10.08 comes from Sublime's "Doin' Time". If you were born in America after 1979 you probably have this track ingrained in your head. And why shouldn't you? It's a great song with its dubbed out bass line, groovy drum samples, layered with scratchin' complemented with reverb (I think, please correct me if otherwise), a dog barking, lo-fi guitar, with a sample of the Herbie Mann recording "Summertime" laying out the initial pulse of the track and under riding the whole endeavour. All the while Bradley Nowell soulfully cracking lines like "The tension is getting harder/I like to hold her/head under water".

Check it out here.

Herbie Mann's version of "Summertime" was recorded in 1961 on his At the Village Gate album. Check it out here.

The song "Summertime" was originally composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 Opera Porgy & Bess. Check it out here. It is loosely based on the Ukrainian lullaby "Oy Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon" which means "The Dream Passes By the Windows".

The opening line from the Gershwin version was also borrowed by Sublime.

"Summertime" brings together at least 100 years of music, which, I think is incredible. I couldn't find any history on the Ukrainian Lullaby. Please foward any info you have.
There is a group called The Summertime Connection
that collects various recordings of the composition.
